If you have decided that an online degree in the Criminal Justice field is right for you, then you should read the following checklist to make sure that the institution you choose is legitimate and your time and money are not wasted.
1. Is the institution accredited?
This is very important to know because you do not want to spend your hard-earned money on a degree that is not even real. Even phony universities can say they are accredited. To find out if your chosen online college or university is accredited, go to the Council for Higher Education’s website and check out their lists of legitimate online degrees first before you pay any tuition.
2. Does the online college or university have a wide variety of Criminal Justice degree programs?
It is always nice to have options and you will find that to be true when further your education as well. Do not settle for an online degree that is sort of what you want. Find one that is exactly what you want to do and that fits your schedule to a tee.
3. Are you going to be able to complete the degree in the amount of time allotted?
Again, this is about wasting time and money. Really do a self check of who you are and what you really want out of life. If you tend to be one of those people who is really gung-ho about something only to lose steam half-way through, I do not recommend an online program.
4. Are you self-motivated?
Since you will not have an instructor or other students to compete against, you will need to motivate yourself to succeed. This can be really hard for some individuals who need a nudge every now and then to get their work done — on time and totally complete. Excuses will only hurt yourself and your wallet if you fall too far behind.
5. Has anyone ever heard of this Criminal Justice degree or online institution?
Ask around at local agencies that are in your chosen degree field and see if they have ever heard of the degree that you are interested in. Ask the same question about the online college or university that is offering the degree. If no one has heard of them, move on.
