Online_EducationIf you’re ready to take the plunge into online learning but don’t know where to start, relax. While it may seem a little daunting at first glance, earning credits through online college requires a few strategies that are easily managed. If you take a proactive approach to e-learning and pay close attention to what’s required to complete each course, you’ll find online college an exciting and rewarding way to earn a degree.

Here are some strategies that will help you to become a stellar student:

1. Read and organize everything. One of the biggest mistakes that many online students make it to use online courses as a shortcut to success. While you may not be sitting in a traditional classroom while you learn, it’s imperative that you put in the same amount of time with your online course as you would a “live” class. Read everything in the course. Print anything that the instructor has posted and organize it in a notebook. It’s too easy to get distracted if you don’t have the materials readily available at your fingertips. By keeping hard copies of the information in an organized portfolio, you’ll reduce the chances of overlooking important information and deadlines.

Study_Break2. Contact your instructor. Even though you’re participating in “distance learning,” you shouldn’t keep your distance from the person teaching the course. If you are within driving distance of the college and can fit it into your schedule, visit the instructor. If you can meet with your instructor and put a face to the teacher, it will enhance your e-learning experience. Don’t be shy about calling your instructor or e-mailing him when you have questions. Students who take a proactive approach to online learning report higher satisfaction than those who keep their distance and try to learn in a vacuum. Whether you’re sitting in a live lecture or learning online, your teacher is there to help you. Ask questions early and frequently to clear any confusion and to enhance learning outcomes. The more contact you have with your instructor, the more enjoyable the class will be for you.

3. Respect deadlines. Online college is not equivalent to “out-of-sight out-of-mind” learning. Like any college course, you’ll have deadlines to meet. Respect those due dates, and you’ll enhance your learning experience. Get behind, and you’ll probably have a difficult time catching up with the material. If an extenuating circumstance prevents you from submitting work, contact the instructor to see if you can make arrangements to submit late work. You’ll find that open communication is the key to success in an online class.

Succeeding in an online college program starts with taking it just as seriously as you would a traditional class. As long as you are committed to success, adhere to deadlines, and stay in constant contact with your instructor, your online learning experience will be an enjoyable one.
